Beverly Barton is a true Southern lady. She may write gritty mainstream romantic suspense but she's always a lady about it. She is the kind of person you want as a bosom buddy. You have to wonder how someone so warm and generous comes up with such chilling plotlines and murderous characters. In her newest romantic suspense novel, THE MURDER GAME, the reader is drawn into a dark and frightening game of "cat and mouse" or "kill or be killed" with a diabolical heartless killer as the game master.
We recently caught up with Beverly for a few quick questions about her new book and future plans.
Is THE MURDER GAME connected to any of your other books?
THE MURDER GAME is a sequel to last year’s THE DYING GAME and features secondary characters from that book, Griffin Powell and Nicole Baxter, as the protagonists.
Griffin Powell has appeared in several of your other books and you have hinted that he has a mysterious past. Will you reveal the secret about those ten missing years of his life in THE MURDER GAME?"
Yes, I will explain where Griff was during those ten years and what happened to him. Readers will learn how he left the U.S. at 22, on the verge of a pro football contract, and returned at 32, a multi-billionaire.
Griff and Nic intensely disliked each other in THE DYING GAME and yet we picked up on sexual sparks between these two. Can we expect a romance between them in this new book?
Oh, yes! These two are forced to work together and in doing so become better acquainted. They realize that they have misjudged each other in the past and gradually forge a sexually charged friendship. Expect fireworks between Nic and Griff.
Can you tell us a little something about the villain in this book?
He refers to himself as the Hunter and his victims as the Prey. He is diabolically brilliant and inherently evil. He derives great pleasure from his victim’s pain and subjugation. But what he needs to fully enjoy his wicked murder game is a worthy opponent, someone who can try to save the victim before he kills her. He chooses Nic and Griff, knowing their desire to stop him will force them to unite against him and play his game.
Will Griff and Nic show up in future books?
Yes, I plan for them to appear as either major or minor secondary characters in some of my future Zebra Romantic Suspense novels.
I’ve heard rumors that you will be ending your long-running series for Harlequin/Silhouette, The Protectors. Is this true?
Yes, this is true. The final book will be written early 2008 and has a tentative release date of December 2008. This will be the long-awaited story for Lucie Evans and Sawyer McNamara. The title is DYING FOR YOU and will be released under the HQN imprint.
Will you, Linda Howard, & Linda Winstead Jones be writing more Raintree books?
No. The Raintree trilogy that I wrote with my good friends, Linda and LJ, was a true labor of love, but due to our separate and very demanding writing careers with three different publishers, we will not be doing another trilogy. The Raintree books: Inferno, Haunted, and Sanctuary will be re-released as a single trade paperback novel in October 2008.
What do you have planned next, after THE MURDER GAME?
I am completing another Zebra Romantic Suspense novel, COLD HEARTED, which is scheduled for release in September 2008. This book does not have a typical serial killer and is more of a mystery/psychological thriller novel, with strong romantic elements. The hero of the book works for the Powell Agency, so readers will get a glimpse of Nic and Griff’s life in this story.
