Secrets in Summer: A Novel
By Nancy Thayer
Three years after her divorce from Boyz Szweda, Darcy Cotterill is feeling settled in her home on Nantucket Island. She loves her dream job at the local library, and she’s made friends in the community, even been dating. But that peace is shattered when Boyz and his new wife rent the house next door for the summer.
Darcy is soon involved with Boyz’s stepdaughter, Willow, and as the days go on, her affection for the teenager grows. Willow loves having another adult in her life, and Darcy introduces Willow to many others in the neighborhood and town, helping the teen find a summer job or two guaranteed to keep Willow busy – and out of trouble. In the meantime, Darcy is busy with her community projects, work, and her handsome boyfriend, Nash.
As time moves on into the dog days of summer, Darcy’s involvement with some of her neighbors takes on a different cast, and at times she wonders about how she has become the holder of so many secrets, so many lives that intertwine and intersect in both good and bad ways. An error in judgement on Darcy’s part could cost her what she holds most dear, and she’s not certain that she can fix her own problems as readily as it seems she fixes everyone else’s. She’s not one to give up without a fight, even if it means giving up that which she holds so very, very dear.
Secrets in Summer is classic Nancy Thayer – set in Thayer’s own home, Nantucket, and revolving around strong, interesting and dynamic women. Darcy hasn’t had it easy, but she’s worked hard to get where she’s at, and readers will root for things to work out for the best. The situations Darcy finds herself in are complex yet believable, and call for an emotional strength that Thayer is adept at providing to her characters. Secrets in Summer is a perfect vacation read; even if you aren’t heading for the beautiful islands off the coast of Massachusetts, this book will take you there!
