Claws for Concern (Cat in the Stacks Mystery)
By Miranda James
This ninth installment of the series shows Charlie and cat-sidekick Diesel moving a little more slowly than usual - maybe because it's July in Athena, Georgia. We spend the first part of the book going with Charlie and his extra-large Maine Coon about their daily business. Part of the mystery, it seems, happens while we're not really looking, and the rest took place decades earlier.
A true-crime author has approached Charlie to write a new book about the amateur sleuth and the crimes he's solved. They don't expect to become embroiled in a cold case. But when Charlie's suddenly-discovered step-cousin is almost run down in the road, it opens questions into who really killed a family in a nearby town. Charlie's cousin had been the main suspect, and his odd behavior has Charlie convinced his cousin got away with murder. He needs to investigate before he can let the man become involved with his family!
While all the characters are their usual charming selves - including cameos by the Southern Ladies, the Ducote Sisters - the plot of this novel isn't as tightly woven as earlier installments. This doesn't make it any less of an enjoyable read, however. This series remains highly recommended, as does the author's Southern Ladies series. This novel can be read as a standalone, but if you haven't started the series yet, go back to the beginning and start with Murder Past Due. You won't regret it!
