Another top-notch tale by the very talented Carolyn Hart who gives us a new Annie Darling story that will keep any mystery fan happily reading, beginning to end. As always, the characters are lifelike and commanding the reader’s attention as they step into the world of Broward’s Rock, the island off the coast of South Carolina where the bookshop Death on Demand that we’d all love to visit is located.
A well known author has decided to return to his roots to confront the people who served as the basis of the characters in his book. Annie Darling is drawn into setting up a talk for him and after learning what he intends to do, lets people know she and her bookstore are no longer involved. The author has plans to destroy people’s lives in public and she wants no part of it.
At the time of the talk, he is found murdered. Then the hunt for a murderer begins and Annie is involved to save a friend. Working together, the two uncover more than one motive for murder and then must find the one that drove someone to kill.
This is a tale with all the intrigue and red herrings and false trails a reader could want. The realistic settings include dark forest trails where alligators may lurk for the unwary, lovely shops to visit with things we all wish we could buy. Death on Demand holds a particular attraction for readers longing to find new summer reading. Join the sunburned tourist who plays golf or those who prefer the shaded porches to look out on a world the readers of this series willingly call their second home. Share the adventure of catching a killer who may be a visitor or one of the residents. There is enough action in this story to lure the reader forward while savoring the taste of the old south mixed with a well crafted mystery.
