USA Today Bestseller

Biweekly marriage proposals from men who can't see beyond her (admittedly breathtaking) looks are starting to get on Lady Clara Fairfax's nerves. Desperate to be something more than ornamental, she escapes to her favorite charity. When a child is in trouble, she turns to tall, dark, and annoying barrister Oliver Radford.

Though he's unexpectedly found himself in line to inherit a dukedom, Radford's never been part of fashionable society, and the blonde beauty, though not entirely bereft of brains, isn't part of his plans. But Clara overwhelms even his infallible logic, and when wedlock looms, all he can do is try not to lose his head over her . . .

It's an inconvenient marriage by ordinary standards, but these two are far from ordinary. Can the ton's most adored heiress and London's most difficult bachelor fall victim to their own unruly desires?

Oliver Radford hasn’t seen Lady Clara Fairfax for thirteen years, since she was little more than a child. Now that they have had occasion to become reacquainted, he realizes that Clara remains as intelligent, and even more beautiful, than the young woman he once knew. For Clara’s part, she’s hoping that Radford’s law degree, prodigious intelligence and uncanny sense of detail will help her with a small matter involving one of her pet projects, The Milliner’s Society for the Education of Indigent Females.

Against his better judgment, Radford agrees to help Clara locate a boy who has gone missing, presumably held by a band of ruffians who lie, cheat and steal to stay alive. What neither Radford nor Clara realize is that they have a common enemy, a man who, once he draws the conclusion that Radford has a weak spot in Clara, devises a plan to take care of them both. Permanently.

Radford and Clara have plans for a future that would include the lasting commitment of marriage, but it’s not quite as simple as that. Clara’s parents have a few concerns, to say the least. And there’s the matter of the angry enemy to consider. But what poses the largest threat to their future happiness turns out to be something that neither of them has anticipated, at least in the short term…

Dukes Prefer Blondes is the fourth in Loretta Chase’s “Dressmakers Series” and although the focus is far from the dressmaker shop owned by the Noirot sisters, the connection remains through Sophy Noirot’s marriage to Clara’s brother, Longmore. That hardly matters, however, as Radford and Clara’s story stands powerfully well on its own. The witty repartee between the two characters is fabulous, and as always, Chase delivers with strong woman who aren’t afraid to stand up to equally strong men. Radford and Clara each have their own vulnerabilities, however, and it is those vulnerabilities that will make readers love them even more. Dukes Prefer Blondes is an intelligent romance story with snappy dialogue and sexual tension that leaves singe marks along the pages. Want to kick of the New Year with a great book? Start right here with Dukes Prefer Blondes!
