Product Description:

Once upon a time there were three young ladies, who, despite their fortunes, had been on the marriage mart a bit too long. They were known as “the Spinster Heiresses” . . .

He’s inherited a title, but not a penny to speak of, so the Earl of Rochdale knows he must find a wife—preferably one tolerably pretty and good-tempered, but definitely wealthy, and who will exchange her fortune for his family name.

His choice: Leonie Charnock, one of the season’s “Spinster Heiresses.” Years before, the earl had saved the dark-eyed beauty’s reputation and she is still breathtakingly lovely, leading Rochdale to hope that their marriage will be more than in name only.

However, Leonie doesn’t want to be anyone’s wife. Nearly destroyed by the secrets in her past, Leonie agrees to their union with one condition: there will be a wedding but no bedding. But it’s a condition the new Countess Rochdale isn’t sure even she can keep. . .

When Roman Gilchrist, Earl of Rochdale, inherited his late father?s title, he also inherited his sizable gambling debts, and his creditors are demanding payment. There is little room in Roman?s meager budget for such an extravagant expense, especially as his estate crumbles before his eyes and his extended family relies on him for support. Roman needs a quick infusion of cash, and what better way to obtain it than through a marriage dowry?

Leonie Charnock, one of the wealthy Spinster Heiresses, is facing yet another pointless London Season. She does not want to marry and finds the whole husband hunting ritual a bore. At least that?s what she tells her friends. In truth, Leonie carries a terrible dark secret, known to only one man from her past, Roman Gilchrist. And wouldn'?t you know, after all these years, h'e?d show up at the Marquis of Devon?'s ball.

Leonie is stunned by Roman?'s presence, and even more so by his bold marriage proposal, which has little to do with hearts and flowers, and everything to do with money. But both of them have debts to repay and demons to conquer, and neither of them can do it alone.

Maxwell?'s first novel of her Spinster Heiress series sets the tone for what promises to be a terrific series. Her writing is a pleasure to read, with crisp, fast-paced plotting, and clever, often humorous dialog. The characters are likable despite their all too human flaws. For a tale set in 1813, some plot elements hit mighty close to home even today. Can?'t wait to see what happens in book two. What a great start to a captivating series.
