Product Description:

Lady Kiera Darby and Sebastian Gage investigate a macabre murderer in this historical mystery from the author of Mortal Arts.

Scotland, 1830.
Following the death of her dear friend, Lady Kiera Darby is in need of a safe haven. Returning to her childhood home, Kiera hopes her beloved brother Trevor and the merriment of the Hogmanay Ball will distract her. But when a caretaker is murdered and a grave is disturbed at nearby Dryburgh Abbey, Kiera is once more thrust into the cold grasp of death.

While Kiera knows that aiding in another inquiry will only further tarnish her reputation, her knowledge of anatomy could make the difference in solving the case. But agreeing to investigate means Kiera must deal with the complicated emotions aroused in her by inquiry agent Sebastian Gage.

When Gage arrives, he reveals that the incident at the Abbey was not the first—some fiend is digging up old bones and holding them for ransom. Now Kiera and Gage must catch the grave robber and put the case to rest…before another victim winds up six feet under.

Lady Kiera Darby has spent the entirety of her New Year’s Eve at a lively party, hoping the spirited celebration will keep her doldrums at bay. She’s thinking that the evening has been a success until the stroke of midnight brings a visitor – and news of a death on the estate. Despite his reluctance to involve her, Kiera’s uncle (and host) asks that she assist in the investigation, and once more Kiera is drawn to the scene of a crime, and a gruesome one at that.

Sebastian Gage is called in to assist with the inquiry, and Kiera has mixed feelings upon his arrival. She is happy to see the man who sparks more than a little interest in her romantically, yet she knows that Gage has been called because it is a man’s job to conduct an inquiry, not hers. The time they spend together not only deepens their mutual attraction, but reaffirms Kiera’s belief that there is much, perhaps too much, that she still doesn’t know about the enigmatic Gage.

As the investigation broadens, Kiera and Gage uncover many new leads and bits of information, but none of it points in any one direction. To complicate matters further, Kiera finally begins to address her deep-seated feelings regarding betrayals in the past and the possibility of a future with Gage. In the meantime, the connections between the series of crimes becomes evident, but solving this mystery may involve more risk than anyone had counted on.

A Grave Matter is the third Lady Darby mystery by author Anna Lee Huber, and it’s every bit as interesting and fun to read as the first two in the series. It’s quite clear that the author has done extensive research into the geography and history of the Scottish borderlands, and her ability to include historical details with an even hand adds much to the plot without weighing heavily on the pace. While not the primary focus, the romance between Kiera and Gage adds much to the story, as does the inclusion of Kiera’s siblings and other family members.

This series continues to remain compelling and fresh, a definite must read for those looking for a fascinating protagonist and a riveting storyline.
