Product Description:

The latest mystery from the national bestselling author of A Study in Death tangles Lady Kiera Darby and Sebastian Gage in a dangerous web of religious and political intrigue.

July 1831. In the midst of their idyllic honeymoon in England’s Lake District, Kiera and Gage’s seclusion is soon interrupted by a missive from her new father-in-law. A deadly incident involving a distant relative of the Duke of Wellington has taken place at an abbey south of Dublin, Ireland, and he insists that Kiera and Gage look into the matter.

Intent on discovering what kind of monster could murder a woman of the cloth, the couple travel to Rathfarnham Abbey school. Soon a second nun is slain in broad daylight near a classroom full of young girls. With the sinful killer growing bolder, the mother superior would like to send the students home, but the growing civil unrest in Ireland would make the journey treacherous.

Before long, Kiera starts to suspect that some of the girls may be hiding a sinister secret. With the killer poised to strike yet again, Kiera and Gage must make haste and unmask the fiend, before their matrimonial bliss comes to an untimely end...

Kiera and Gage are enjoying an extended honeymoon at their friend Lord Keswick’s beautiful home when they are summoned by an unlikely requestor to investigate a recent murder – in Ireland. Further complicating their investigation is the location of the crime, an abbey set in a village with a strong distaste for papist matters.

As the newlyweds begin gathering details, they quickly realize that they are smack in the middle of a rebellious group of villagers who are unhappy about the rules and regulations they are forced to follow, especially a tithe that they are compelled to make. Tension grows between the two sides of that issue, and Gage and Kiera find themselves knee-deep in local politics. With some creative side-stepping they persevere, making slow progress till Kiera makes a discovery that shocks them both.

Both Gage and Kiera have suspicions about what actually occurred, particularly about who was involved, but the smokescreens created by the local inhabitants are slow to clear. When they do, the truth is plain to see. Or is it?

As Death Draws Near is the fifth installment in author Anna Lee Huber’s fantastic Lady Darby Series. Huber’s depth of historical research is evident from the very beginning of the story, drawing details from the conflicts between Irishmen, Ireland’s history with England, and the deep divide between Catholics and Protestants to create a richly textured plot with an interesting cast of characters. Kiera and Gage’s marriage is new and fresh, and the development of their relationship plays well against the conflicts created by the murder investigation, leaving lots of room to see how this interesting duo will continue to grow as married investigators. As Death Draws Near is appealing on many levels, from the sense of local history to the relationships and ties between characters, but it’s Kiera, Lady Darby, we’ve all come to see, and she doesn’t disappoint whatsoever! Bring on book six!
