Product Description:

Paperback edition The Queen's Governess by Karen Harper Katherine Ashley, the daughter of a poor country squire, happily secures an education and a place for herself in a noble household. But when Thomas Cromwell, a henchman for King Henry VIII, brings her to the royal court as a spy, Kat enters into a thrilling new world of the Tudor monarchs. Freed from a life of espionage by Cromwell's downfall, Kat eventually befriends Anne Boleyn. As a dying favor to the doomed queen, Kat becomes governess and surrogate-mother to the young Elizabeth Tudor. Together they suffer bitter exile, assassination attempts, and imprisonment, barely escaping with their lives. But they do, and when Elizabeth is crowned, Kat continues to serve her, faithfully guarding all the queen's secrets (including Elizabeth's affair with the dashing Robert Dudley) . . . and ultimately emerging as the lifelong confidante and true mother-figure to Queen Elizabeth.

The lust for everything Tudor is a common ailment amongst history buffs. It afflicts viewers who loved The Tudors on HBO and the movie Shakespeare In Love. It strikes readers who devoured The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory and I, Elizabeth by Margaret George. And Tudor lust can be slaked by another skilled author, Karen Harper, with her book The Queen’s Governess.

Filled with treachery, danger, and of course, great clothes, The Queen’s Governess features Elizabeth’s confidante and lady in waiting Katherine "Kat" Ashley, who begins her life as the daughter of country squire with a bleak future until a chance meeting with master manipulator and chief minister Thomas Cromwell brings her into palace intrigue as his spy. Kat becomes a gentlewoman in waiting to the tragic Queen Anne Boleyn. While in the tower awaiting her fate, Anne makes Kat promise to stay with her daughter, the Princess Elizabeth, to keep her safe and guide her. Kat becomes Elizabeth’s most trusted friend, helping her survive political plots, accusations of treason, and questions of legitimacy.

The Queen’s Governess is an engrossing and entertaining read, and Harper has chosen an excellent heroine in the real life character of Kat Ashley, who is able to move through the tumult of royal society without notice but is able to observe all. The Queen’s Governess goes beyond the basic, well-known stories of Henry, Anne, Mary and Elizabeth and the machinations of the Tudor court, bringing a freshness to their tales. Impeccably researched with rich detail, Harper is a consummate storyteller with all of her novels, including a Tudor mystery series featuring Elizabeth, and her critically acclaimed Mistress Shakespeare.

The Queen’s Governess satisfies the Tudor lust extremely well.
