Product Description:

Maddy lives a hard life, working as a waitress at the Monte Rio Café in a town on California’s Russian River. Abandoned by her mother when she was a teenager, she is nonetheless grateful for the cabin where she lives—and for Cheryl, the older waitress who watches over her while Maddy anticipates the birth of her baby.  Then Maddy goes into labor prematurely and loses her precious baby, a loss almost more than any young woman can bear. Soon after Maddy discovers a tiny infant in the dumpster behind the café, keeps the baby, and names her Judith. Maddy takes the money in her tip jar and moves to the Bay Area, where she can study to become a nurse, to be better than the things her momma said about her. But how can Maddy take care of little Judith, work and go to school?

Maddy McCray’s life had hit rock bottom. Maddy’s second attempt to have a child had just ended in a miscarriage leaving Maddy feeling like she has nothing left for which to live when she hears some strange sounds coming from the dumpster behind the restaurant in Monte Rio where she works as a waitress. When Maddy investigates, she discovers a new baby that some seems to have just been thrown away. Still in shock, Maddy takes the baby home with her, where she comes up with a bold, outrageous plan. With the help of her friend Cheryl, Maddy saves what money she can in a month, and then Maddy, Cheryl, and new baby Judith move to the California Bay area to build a new life together. But how long will it take before all of their pasts catch up with the newly forged family?

Readers will need to have a box of Kleenex or a stack of hankies handy before beginning Maddy’s Phoenix since the author successfully pulls out all the literary stops when it comes to crafting an emotionally compelling tale about love, family, and second chances that is guaranteed to tug at the heart. In addition to a potently poignant plot, the novel’s realistically appealing protagonists and the powerful message of hope and affection that underpins the story will definitely resonate with readers, who value contemporary romances that manage to explore some of life’s difficult topics while still delivering the much needed and much appreciated happily ever after we all crave.
