Product Description:

It is 1946, and war-weary young ex-intelligence officer Lane Winslow leaves London to look for a fresh start. When she finds herself happily settled in King's Cove, a sleepy hamlet nestled in the idyllic interior of British Columbia surrounded by a suitably eclectic cast of small-town characters she feels like she may finally be able to put her past to rest.

But then a body is discovered, the victim of murder, and although she works alongside the town’s inspectors Darling and Ames to discover who might possibly have motivation to kill, she casts doubt on herself. As the investigation reveals facts that she has desperately tried to keep a secret, it threatens to pull her into a vortex of even greater losses than the ones she has already endured.

A clever postwar mystery that will appeal to fan of historical mysteries with women sleuths like the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear or the Bess Crawford series by Charles Todd.

Lanette (Lane) Winslow is looking forward to settling into her home in British Columbia. Newly relocated from England, she’s adjusting to a post-war world where rationing is a thing of the past, and lights and appliances turn off and on at the flick of a switch. Her service during the war has left her with a longing for peace and quiet, but that solitude is quickly shattered when a body is found in the stream near her home.

The village where Lane resides is small and isolated, and the local police and residents are hard-pressed to come up with a reason for the victim to have been in town. Lane is on the short list of suspects, however, and she finds herself thrust into the very public position of having to explain parts of her past she intended to put behind her. The tangled web of anger and deceit that ties several of the village’s residents soon works to help exclude Lane, but does not provide another suspect in her place. Lane is determined to unlock the puzzle, and working with the local policeman, Inspector Darling, she does just that … but it may not have been her smartest move.

With a delightfully broad list of potential suspects, interesting local personalities and a protagonist (Lane) with a fascinating and complex history, A Killer in King’s Cove has something for every reader. The charm of Britain translates perfectly to rural, newly-developing British Columbia, where everyone has a back-story and few are native to the region. The psychological aspect of characters having served in various capacities during World Wars I and II adds depth and drama to an already interesting cast, and Lane’s history, in particular, is one that will draw readers in quickly. This is an auspicious start to a quite promising series!
