Product Description:

MICHAEL CONNELLY calls Peter Robinson "an author with amazing empathy, a snare-trap ear for dialogue, and a clear eye for the telling detail."

See why in Sleeping in the Ground, the gripping new novel starring Alan Banks featuring an opening scene you'll never forget, and a finale you won't see coming.

At the doors of a charming country church, an unspeakable act destroys a wedding party. A huge manhunt ensues. The culprit is captured. The story is over.

Except it isn't. For Alan Banks, still struggling with a tragic loss of his own, there's something wrong about this case — something unresolved. Reteaming with profiler Jenny Fuller, the relentless detective deeper into the crime... deep enough to unearth long-buried secrets that reshape everything Banks thought he knew about the events outside that chapel.

And when at last the shocking truth becomes clear, it's almost too late.

Packed with twists and turns, heart and soul, this is another triumph from an author "at the top of his game" (LOUISE PENNY).

An absolutely horrific crime scene – the murder of several members of a local wedding party – has Alan Banks right where he operates best: in the thick of solving a murder, or in this case, multiple murders. A suspect is found rather quickly, too quickly for Banks to feel fully comfortable, and as he pushes deeper into the investigation he finds what he’s looking for – a link to a potential additional suspect that may have a tie, however tenuous, to the victims.

Banks and his team are working day and night to substantiate the connection they feel must exist between these horrible murders and some other events, but just what, where and when eludes them. One idea leads to another, and yet another, but Banks is not certain that his team has found enough to stand on, enough to pursue what could well be a time-consuming stretch into the past, with little or no results to show for it.

In the meantime, Banks himself is taking a bit of a mental journey back into his past, to his days at university and his first serious girlfriend, Emily. His fond reminiscences and self-reflection add some new depth to a character that readers have known for years, and the revelations do much to bring a new side to Detective Superintendent Banks. Another connection from the less-distant past has also reappeared, and it will be interesting to see where things go – if anywhere.

Author Peter Robinson has written over twenty novels featuring Alan Banks and his team, and this latest release, Sleeping in the Ground, does not disappoint. The story is deep and introspective, with both the murder mystery and Banks himself connecting past and present, with events from long ago featuring as importantly as those happening as the story unfolds. There is a sense of urgency that builds throughout the story as details become clearer, moving towards a climax and dénouement that will have readers turning pages as fast as they can be read. Sleeping in the Ground is a true page-turner - well-paced, suspenseful, and a fantastic addition to a thoroughly enjoyable series.
